Podcast: Spanish wine with Andrew Halliwell

A wonderful conversation about all things Spanish vino with Andrew Halliwell, a British winemaker based in La Rioja.

Sit back, pour yourself a glass of red or white or rosé and enjoy this conversation with the brilliant Andrew Halliwell - I highly recommend you follow him on Twitter/X (@ADHalliwell)

Here are some of Andrew’s recommendations from the podcast:

  • Value: Unfashionable regions e.g. - Navarra/Somontano/Campo de Borja/ Cigales /Montilla Moriles - producers e.g. El Zorzal (Navarra) and Borsao (Campo de Borja).

  • Areas to watch: Ribeiro region and perhaps interior south east Spain, e.g. Almansa and Yecla.

  • Also check out: Rioja with a green back label - is a kind of anything-goes catch-all category that includes plenty of new wines and a few gems.

And some of my own recommendations for red wines:

  • Guímaro from the Ribera Sacra region.

  • Iceni a wine from the Tesalia bodega in Cádiz.

  • Habla la Tierra from Extremadura.

And the Madrid wine bar I recommended is La Fisna, Lavapiés.
